Mathis Food Affairs, Corviglia / origin and philosophy

The crazy man on the mountain – how everything began

My father, Hartly Mathis, and I most probably invented what is called nowadays ‘fine mountain dining’. Already back in 1967, Hartly was convinced that it would be possible to have something better up in the mountains than sausages with French fries or spaghetti. With exquisite creations that never lost their straightforward character, he brought gourmet cuisine to the heights. In next to no time, the restaurant ‘La Marmite’ became the parlour of illustrious guests who contributed to the unrivalled renowned reputation of St. Moritz. For over 20 years, I have continued this tradition together with the MATHIS FOOD AFFAIRS’ team, constantly introducing new culinary ideas. I enjoy creating new tasting experiences based on dishes from my Engadine home combined with exotic elements. My truffle and caviar specialities are especially well-known and have earned me the nickname ‘the crazy man on the mountain’.

To me, the mountains signify home and security. This is where I can realize my creative ideas. I want my dishes to make people feel happy and satisfied. Naturally, perfect service and the right setting must be part of this. In the meantime, six gastronomic establishments at MATHIS FOOD AFFAIRS offer culinary delights in all categories. In fact, they all merge into one another, making the gastronomic experience at MATHIS FOOD AFFAIRS so unique. On Corviglia, gourmet fans and celebrities meet skiers and hikers, families with children, and epicures of all kinds. True emotions become reality up here.
